"Franz
Raab, former commander of the Thaelmann Battalion in the Spanish
Civil War, died in Penzberg (Bavaria) at age 72.
Involved with the Communist Party since after World War I,
the fascists sentenced him to death in 1933.
He managed to escape his bailiffs by leaving Germany.
After the Spanish Civil War had ended, Franz Raab was imprisoned
in a concentration camp in France from where he made an escape
to join the French Resistance.
He returned to Germany in 1945 and was appointed provisional
mayor of Penzberg city.
An obituary released by the West German Federation of former
Volunteers fighting for the Spanish Republic emphasizes the
fact that until his death, Franz Raab kept up the figh for
a progressive, democratic future of his country and for freedom
in Spain.
"The beloved Commander of the legendary battalion will
live on in the memory of the German International Brigade
veterans and in the songs of the Spanish struggle for freedom." |
